Chimney cap

Top flue tile (or flue opening)
The top clay tile or metal opening must stay intact under the cap. Cracks and shifts after impact or long moisture exposure open a direct rain path into the flue.
Drip edge (crown edge / wash)

Chimney crown

Liner joint

Smoke chamber
Funnels smoke from the damper area into the flue. Rough chambers collect creosote and can spill smoke indoors—needs interior access to evaluate.
Creosote

Damper

Firebox seams and joints
Firebrick joints must contain heat. Open gaps need repair before regular use. Say whether the unit is gas or wood when you call.
Clearances
Required space to wood framing and finishes. Often invisible until a deeper inspection or remodel. Do not finish tight against a chase without confirmation.
Ash dump
Door and pit that catch ash under some fireboxes. Failed dumps hide moisture and nesting below.
Furnace / appliance cleanout

Chase cover (framed lid)
